Awesome Ambleside, England
Guided | Duration: 3 days | Grade: 4-5

Based at the northern end of Windermere in the Lake District, our hand-picked routes are some of the most rewarding and challenging in the UK. It’s our Chief Guide Steve’s favourite due to its technical trails that include steep rocky descents, tight switchbacks and long flowing traverses.

Highlands Coast to Coast, Scotland
Guided | Duration: 7 days | Grade: 4

Dive into the very heart of the Scottish Highlands on a series of ancient drove roads, loch-side routes, forest tracks and twisting singletrack. Over six days of riding our route will take you 235 miles from Loch Hourn on the west coast to Montrose on the east coast.

Chilterns, England
Guided | Duration: 3 days | Grade: 2-3

A cracking mix of forest singletrack and open farmland trails, with plenty of superb descents. There’s the odd technical section and cheeky climb to keep you on your toes but the pay off at the end of the ride is worth it, as you rest up in a superb 16th century coaching inn.

The Sandstone Way in motion

There is no need to travel far when you have some of the best trails awaiting you at your doorstep! Covering 120 miles in just 3 days, our remote and scenic Sandstone Way route in Northumberland is bursting with challenges and is a fantastic journey for those looking to get away from the chaos of everyday life without leaving UK. Get inspired by our latest video that will give you a great insight into the trip with the foreword from our Mountain Biking Product Manager Matt Cain

‘After three seasons guiding the Sandstone Way I still enjoy every trip as much as the first. There is just something very gratifying about a proper cross-country journey.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a really hard technical descent or a day blasting round a trail centre as much as anyone, but the reward that comes after a big day out in the countryside is different. Setting out early in the morning with a far-away destination in mind changes the way you ride. You tend to absorb the scenery that little bit more, taking your time to eat well, take some photos and chat to your fellow riders. There is more of a feeling of comradery, support and a joint sense of accomplishment when you roll in to the finish of the day. And what’s even better is heading to bed, well fed and knowing that you have nothing to do the next day but ride your bike.

It might be a little ‘old-school’ but I don’t think that place-to-place mountain biking tours have ever really lost their charm. The Sandstone Way is the perfect way to try out a multi-day tour before tackling a bigger trip in Scotland or abroad.’

Words of wisdom: Our top singletrack advice

unnamed-1Tricky root sections, steeper descents and complex corners all provide singletrack challenges that make for a rewarding day on the bike. We caught up with our mountain bike specialist Matt Cain, to find out his top tips for taking on these challenging trails:

Advice for beginners…

“While perhaps considered the pinnacle, or holy grail, of mountain biking, a sweet piece of winding singletrack can be intimidating for the uninitiated. Don’t worry though! Take each trail at your own pace and stop to scope out anything you’re not comfortable with. Our experienced guides are always happy to pass on their knowledge and dish out advice on the best way to tackle their local trails.”

For those interested in giving singletrack a go for the first time, we recommend our Chilterns trip in the UK.

How to take your newfound skills to the next level…

“Getting comfortable riding singletrack is a lot about familiarity. Once you feel safe with this type of riding, it’s time to slowly build up the level of challenge. Confidence is key and there is no shortcut to gaining this, just get out and ride.”
