Riding in the mountains brings different challenges when compared to all other types of riding and this tour has been designed specifically to ease you into mountain riding. Each day features one main challenging, yet manageable, ascent with the option of a second climb for those who feel the need and have the energy for more. We’ll be there, both on and off the bike, to offer practical advice to help you get to the top comfortably, and will help you with pacing and gearing, safe descending, clothing choices and nutrition.
Designed to be very much a holiday but with added instruction available to ensure that riders new to the mountains will get the most out of their experience in the Alps. It also has plenty of famous climbs packed into the route which will appeal to more experienced cyclists.
After arrival in Geneva we transfer to Samoens, a small town in the heart of the northern Alps and this is where we will be based for the first couple of nights. The region is very beautiful and the scenery is some of the most dramatic in Europe. It is from here that we start our tour of the famous passes of the Savoie region taking in such classics as Morzine-Avoriaz, Colombiere, Aravis, Cormet de Roselend, La Plagne and Madeleine. Of course no alpine cycle tour would be complete without a pilgrimage to the legendary Alpe d’Huez.
The scenery is absolutely stunning and constantly changing throughout the tour and there will be plenty of time to take this all in. Undoubtedly you'll be working up a healthy appetite during your day on the bike. As always the Skedaddle team will be providing plenty of appetising food to keep you going throughout the day. As an introductory alpine experience the daily distances have been kept deliberately lower than those on some of our higher grade mountain challenges.
The trip should serve as an excellent starting point for riders interested in progressing on to tougher, more challenging tours.

I’d known about Skedaddle for many years but never taken the plunged being a fan of solo cycling. I had some concerns the trips would be full of serious club cyclists. It was actually some of the photos and feedback on your site that persuaded me to change my mind. So I was very pleased to meet such a great group of fellow, like-minded cyclists and maybe peloton riding is for me after all!
Jeanette (our tour leader) and her team were excellent, especially when I was struggling in the early rides. They are great at spotting when someone needs help, and can make you get to the top without putting you under pressure. Jeanette has improved my descending skills massively. This was one worry I had before the trip and I now feel confident going down any hills.
Alpe d‘Huez was special, because it is so well known and I was ready for it by that point in the week. Col de Colombiere felt very good because the weather was great and it was the first really notable Tour climb I had done.
The cost of the is not the cheapest but when you consider what the cost covers – 7 nights B & B in good 3 star hotels, a good lunch and the support of 3 excellent guides and the fantastic experience of this kind of cycling then it is good value.
The cycling in general was fantastic. Each day provide a challenge going up and down. I guess my favorite days were day 5 and 6, Day 5 was the first day i reached the top of the main climb of the day without the help of the support van. The climb happened to be the longest of the holiday – a 31 k climb to the Col de la Croix de Fer. The following day was the ascent to the top of Alpe d‘Heuz. I felt i learned a lot on ascending and particularly descending from the help received from the 3 guides.
A very high level of service from first contact onwards
From my previous experience with Skeddadle (two UK weekend breaks) I had high expectations. These were met or even exceeded.
There wasn’t a single bad day even when the weather was less than ideal. I guess the highlight however would have to be the final climb up Alpe d‘Huez. Having said that the long climbs up the Col de Madelaine and Col de Coix de Fer were also brilliant with a reward of fantastic views from the top. The Giant Defy bikes were very good and particularly great to have 11 speed ultegra gearing.
The whole team Peter, Hugh and Joe helped really make the trip memorable. They provided excellent encouragement to all the members of the group of different abilities. Their coaching tips were invaluable for helping us make the most of the trip. Their different skill sets and personalities complemented each other perfectly making a winning team.
Certainly not the cheapest way to do the trip but excellent value for money as really well organised with great team on the road, good bikes, and excellent support from first pre-booking contact to final drop off at the airport.
The cycling was superb, the support was second to none, the information provided by the guides was top class, and they clearly worked very hard to make sure we enjoyed our holiday. Thank you! The lunches especially were very well done. I’m amazed at what the guides managed to come up with. The class David our leader gave on descending techniques improved my cycling significantly…it was a ‘lightbulb moment!’
Not the cheapest holiday of its type but worth it for the quality of the guides, organisation and accommodation.
All the guides were excellent and well organised. I especially valued Hugh’s coaching on the bike.

Another brilliant holiday from Skedaddle!
Everything was perfect, the cycling, the guides, the support, the accommodation and the food. The cycling was tough, even without the optional climbs, and that’s what I expected and wanted. Never once was I pressured to go faster or felt that I couldn’t pop into the van for a tough ascent or descent. Looking forward to booking my next trip in the Alps with Jen and her team.
The thoughtfulness of the team really showed here. They had a left hand drive van which made it harder for them to drive on French roads but meant that they were on the right side to offer their support when they went past during a ride.
The itinerary was different to the original trip notes and I was disappointed when Skedaddle told us about this a few weeks before the trip but I VERY quickly realised that they know best. The changes made to the itinerary were perfect and made the holiday even better.
Excellent tour leadership...
Brilliant rides that had the right balance of distance and difficulty accompanied by excellent accommodation too. Jen led the tour brilliantly. She was very supportive in all areas and excelled in coaching me and the other riders make the most of the rides: a strong communicator, great coach, tough rider and always willing to help the team.
Wonderful from start to finish...
It was a challenge but there was always enough encouragement and support from the Skedaddle team to get you over the top of every mountain. Every day had its rewards – Col du Colombiere was the hardest, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good experience.
The tour leader was inspirational and supportive. He made sure everyone was well taken care off; he was a fountain of wisdom and was excellent company.
I thought the three guides were wonderful. I felt like everyone in the group bonded well. It was basically just Saddle Skedaddle’s plain, ordinary INCREDIBLE trip!
Exceptional biking service - added so much to the trip...
Nigel was an excellent tour guide. Very helpful, approachable, and really wanting us to have a good time. He was very encouraging with the riding, and answering any questions we had. He really made the trip run so smoothly.
Tim was an absolute whiz with the mechanical parts of the bikes, and this was so, so helpful to everyone in the group. I see this as essential! He was both knowledgeable and helpful. Vanessa was very friendly, helpful and made great salads and food for lunch. What I thought was really impressive, was the way the guides looked at our bikes, when putting them away and gave really helpful suggestions, in such a nice way, about the bikes and set up.
Positive Guides and top notch service...
The tour leader (Imogen) was one of the most positive people I have ever met. She really gathered the group into one family. The other guide really guaranteed that all arrangements were working properly and that everyone had real fun. He was an excellent cook who ensured that lunch on the top of the mountain was a good experience.
Lunches provided by the team exceeded my expectations. Food was fresh, tasty and varied from day to day. The restaurants used for evening meals were generally very good with plenty of choice and the two set meals we had were very good.
Really love the ethos of Skedaddle...
Loved the professionalism of the guides, and the level of organisation from Skedaddle.
Stuart and Isobel (guides) were simply fantastic – endlessly patient, willing to share their knowledge and experience and good company too!
The guides were a credit to the organisation...
The whole team provided an excellent service throughout the holiday. Nothing was too much trouble, they were always helpful, encouraging and cheerful.
Really enjoyed it. One of the best holidays I have ever done. I was very impressed with the organisation of the holiday & had no concerns. Everything ran very smoothly, particularly the various transfers. It was brilliant!! The routes were well planned & I felt that each day prepared us for the next challenge.
Great variety in cycling, scenic climbs, enjoyed the extra climbs and riding that was made available to us. Favourite – the descent from col du galibier to Les deux Alpes.
They gave a good delivery of information, properly safety conscious and rightly concerned about the weather conditions. Dean was clearly the most enthusiastic person to have ever pedalled a bicycle. He worked very well with David.
Jeanette, Stewart and Isobel seemed to be working non-stop throughout the trip. They were very friendly in many respects. They gave great tips for riding in the mountains, always encouraged people when the going got tough, and they helped with mechanical issues when anyone in the group needed it.
All of the guides were wonderful!
