For the avid cyclist, Catalonia doesn’t need much of an introduction! This is a road cyclist's Shangri-la, tucked into the north east corner of Spain and taking claim to a third of the Pyrenees. This area is also home to the dramatic and beautiful Costa Bravan shoreline, as well as a stunning interior, comprising the green rolling paradise of the volcanic Garrotxa Parque Natural and the challenging Montseny mountains.
It’s no coincidence that many a professional road team has based their training in the Catalan town of Girona, with some pros making this cycling paradise their permanent home, including Britain’s David Millar and now disgraced, former resident, Lance Armstrong. Holding a magnetic attraction for cyclists, the mix of warm weather, light traffic, and lively bars has proved irresistible, with increasing numbers of dedicated amateur cyclists beginning to follow the trend!
Catalunya isn’t without its own cycling pedigree, having hosted the Vuelta on its Pyrenean passes countless times, Girona was also a stage venue for the Tour de France back in 2009. Another cycling race here is the infamously tough Volta de Catalunya, that often cruises through the roads we will ride.
Our week long cycling tour starts in the regional ‘cycling capital’ Girona, rising from the banks of the River Onyar and picks out a route that weaves its way around the best rides of the area, where the pros are also known to ride. From the famed Gavarres, to the pine clad sierras and the stunning roller coaster roads of the Costa Brava, your riding route has plenty to excite along the way.
This point to point tour of the area takes us along ribbons of perfect asphalt to the coast, into the pre-Pyrenees and back to the coast again, through innumerable picturesque medieval villages, past vast swathes of protected forest and alongside beautiful countryside. The roads are out of this world too: smooth surfaced, contouring and winding, providing the best route through this region. The motorists are so used to cyclists, you may be forgiven for not grasping why they are so polite!
This trip is a holiday for the steady road cyclist hoping to take in a fantastic area, revered by cyclists and taking you over numerous lesser cols and descents that you wish would never end! Hotels are of great quality and character, as is the traditional regional cuisine, typical of this area. Our team in Spain will support you all the way, right to the finish on the beautiful coast at Cadaques, where Dali made his home.
