The Isle of Wight is predominantly rural, with dramatic coastlines dominated by the chalk downland ridge running across the whole island. Freshwater Bay makes an excellent base to explore this beautiful setting by bike. Over 3 rides we will head along old railway tracks, cyclepaths, quiet country lanes and coastal roads, highlighting the island's history and diverse landscape.
The first day will see us following the River Yar to Yarmouth, after which we pass through Newtown and join the Solent down to Cowes. We then use an old rail route beside the Medina to pedal to Newport, before looping back round to Freshwater Bay via the village of Calbourne. The ride on day 2 will take in an old smuggling route near Blackgang, the medieval lighthouse of St Catherine's Oratory, and the picturesque thatched village of Godhill. On day 3 we will visit historic Carisbrooke Castle, in the very heart of the island, as well as enjoying the stunning climbs and descents of the Old Military Road along the south-west section of coastline.
The Isle of Wight is known for being sparsely populated, and a haven for a number of protected and endangered species such as the dormouse and the red squirrel. Combined with the social atmosphere of our country house, this relaxed environment makes a terrific destination for a few leisurely days cycling.
