This superb cycling holiday in the UK visits a lovely part of Northern England, and is a great coast to coast option for those who have already done the C2C or Way of the Roses routes. In four days of riding the W2W route passes through a variety of wonderful countryside, stretching from Walney Island - just outside Barrow-in-Furness on Cumbria’s Irish Sea coast - all the way to Whitby (180 miles away) on the North Sea coast.
The route traverses the Lake district Peninsulas, the low fells around Kendal, the Lune Gorge and Howgill Fells, Orton Fells, Eden valley, North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty then crosses the Tees and Esk Valley, before passing through the North York Moors National Park.
Starting in Walney we quickly cycle through the industrial town of Barrow, before passing through the interesting and attractive small towns of Ulverston, Cartmel, Grange-Over-Sands, Oxenholme, Orton, Kirkby Stephen, Bowes, Barnard Castle, Croft on Tees, Hutton Rudby, Great Ayton, then across the North York Moors National Park to Whitby.
Completing the 179 mile route in four days is a challenge, but it’s an achievable one and a great way to do the Walney to Whitby coast to coast trip. We ride mostly on country lanes, back roads and cycle paths, which have a few off road sections, but nothing that a touring, hybrid or mountain bike with appropriate tyres won't be able to cope with. Each day has its own challenges including some quite steep, but often short climbs.
On day two of our trip we pass ‘The Tan Hill’, the highest Pub in England at 527 metres (1,732ft) above sea level, followed by a great descent down into Bowes. The scenery is both stunning and varied, as you make your way from the Irish Sea to the North Sea across this fascinating part of Northern England.
With excellent transport connections, our meeting point is Oxenholme where we have our first and second night's accommodation making it easy to get to the start of this supported trip. With transfers from Oxenholme to the start at Walney, and from Whitby to either Darlington or back to Oxenholme at the end included in the price, there’s no better way to experience this fascinating route.
